Over the last 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph so many incredible families and couples visiting Zion National Park—and it’s something I never get tired of.
Every session feels a little different. Different light, different season, different energy—but one thing that always stands out is how much the right outfit can elevate the entire experience.

What should we wear for photos in Zion National Park?
I absolutely love working with people in Zion. There’s something about being out in nature, exploring together, and capturing those real, in-between moments that just feels so natural and fun. Our goal at Zion Adventure Photos is always to make your session feel more like part of your adventure—not something you have to stress about.
And one of the biggest questions we get (every single time) is:
“What should we wear?”
So I wanted to put together everything I’ve learned over the years—what works, what photographs beautifully in Zion, and how to choose outfits that not only look amazing in photos, but also feel like you.
The best outfits for photos in Zion National Park are comfortable, movement-friendly, and coordinated with the landscape. Neutral tones, earthy colors, soft pastels, or bold accents all photograph beautifully depending on the season—and most importantly, you should wear colors you love that will look good in your home.
My #1 Tip (This Is What I Tell Every Client)
Wear colors you LOVE—and that will look good in your home.
This is something most people don’t think about.
Your photos aren’t just for Instagram… they’re something you’re going to print, frame, and see every day.
So think about:
the tones in your home
your personal style
what you naturally feel good in
If it doesn’t feel like you, it’s probably not the right outfit.
Dressing for Zion Temperatures (Especially with Kids)
One of the biggest issues I run into during photo sessions in Zion National Park is people not realizing how chilly mornings and evenings can be here—even in the summer. Desert temps very dramaticly from morning to afternoon to evening.
The majority of sessions happen:
at sunrise
sunset
…and temperatures can feel much colder than people expect once you’re standing still outside.
Dressing kids warm enough is especially important.
Cold kids are miserable… and miserable kids make photo sessions a lot harder for everyone.
If you’re unsure about temperatures, I always recommend dressing in layers.
That way you can:
take jackets off if it warms up
add layers back if it gets cold
and keep everyone comfortable throughout the session
It’s always better to have options than to spend the entire session cold.
Some easy layering ideas:
neutral jackets
cozy sweaters
shawls
tights under dresses during cooler months
blankets for little kids between photos
Staying warm and comfortable makes such a huge difference in creating relaxed, happy, natural photos.

Comfort + Movement (More Important Than You Think)
Zion sessions aren’t standing still in a studio.
You’ll be:
walking on trails
stepping over rocks
sitting, moving, interacting
So your outfit needs to:
allow movement
feel comfortable
not require constant adjusting
***If you’re unsure, I always help my clients choose outfits that photograph beautifully in Zion.
Great options:
flowy dresses
breathable fabrics
layers (especially in cooler months)
Avoid anything:
super tight or restrictive
that you’ll be pulling at constantly
or uncomfortable shoes (trust me on this one)
that falls down at the shoulders or shows bra straps easily
Dressing Up vs. Dressing Down (Both Are Beautiful)
One thing I always tell my clients is—there’s no “right” way to dress for your session.
You can absolutely dress up or dress down… and honestly, both are so fun. They just create very different vibes.
Dressing Down (Natural + Relaxed)
Dressing more casually tends to feel really natural in Zion.
Think:
Cute hiking clothes
simple tops + jeans
comfortable layers
This option lets you relax into the experience a little more. You’re not worried about your outfit, you can move freely, and it often leads to more candid, playful moments.
You can still look so good in more casual outfits—and it usually helps you feel more like yourself, which always comes through in the photos.
Dressing Up (Elevated + Intentional)
Dressing up is also such a fun option.
It gives you a chance to:
feel a little more put together
wear something special
create a more elevated, styled look
Flowy dresses, long skirts, or more polished outfits can look absolutely stunning against Zion’s landscape.
Just keep in mind—even when dressing up, you still want to feel comfortable and able to move. That’s key.
My Take
Neither option is better than the other—it really just depends on the vibe you want.
Do you want:
something more relaxed and playful? → dress down
something a little more elevated and styled? → dress up
Either way, the best choice is always the one that feels the most like you.
Best Colors to Wear in Zion
Neutrals (Always a Safe + Beautiful Choice)
Neutrals photograph so well in Zion.
Think:
cream
beige
tan
soft browns
muted gray
These tones complement the red rock instead of competing with it and create a timeless look.
Earthy Tones (My Personal Favorite)
These tones feel like they belong in Zion.
Think:
green
rust
terracotta
mustard
brown/tan
They blend beautifully with the landscape and add warmth and depth to your photos.

Soft Pastels (Best for Spring + Light Summer)
If you want a softer, more romantic look:
Think:
blush
sage
light blue
lavender
cream
These tones look especially beautiful when Zion is green in the spring.

Bold Pops of Color (Used the Right Way)
You can absolutely wear color in Zion—you just want to be intentional.
Think:
a bold dress
one standout piece
paired with neutrals
This creates contrast without overwhelming the scene.

Deeper Tones (Perfect for Fall + Moody Vibes)
If you want something richer and more dramatic:
Think:
deep green
burgundy
navy
burnt orange
These tones photograph beautifully in fall and add depth to your images.

Where Should You Take Your Photos in Zion?
Choosing what to wear is just one part of the experience—where you take your photos makes just as big of a difference.
Some locations in Zion National Park are easy and playful (perfect for families), while others are more adventurous with big views or slot canyon scenery.
I put together a full guide to the best Zion photoshoot locations, including my go-to spots for families, couples, and elopements: Best Places for Photos in Zion National Park (Local Photographer’s Guide)

What to Wear by Season in Zion
Spring (Fresh + Green)
Light neutrals + pastels
Flowy dresses + soft layers
Earthy tones mixed with lighter colors
Summer (Hot + Bright)
Lightweight, breathable fabrics
Light colors to stay cool
Sandals or comfortable walking shoes
Avoid heavy or dark fabrics—it gets HOT
Fall (Warm + Golden)
Deep earthy tones
Layers (jackets, cardigans)
Rich colors like rust, olive, and burgundy
Winter (Quiet + Moody)
Layers + texture (knits, coats)
Neutral + deeper tones
Closed-toe shoes
Adding color to your clothes will make up for less color (especially green) in Zion
Winter in Zion is quiet, peaceful, and honestly so underrated for photos

Coordinating as a Group
The goal is coordinated—not matching.
Think:
same color palette
different tones + textures
mix of solids
Example:
Mom: flowy neutral dress
Dad: earthy tones
Kids: soft mix of both
What to Avoid
Neon colors (they reflect weird tones onto skin)
Busy patterns or logos
Matching outfits
Ill fitting clothes
Uncomfortable shoes or shoes that have never been worn before
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, the best outfits are the ones that:
feel like you
allow you to move naturally
and complement the landscape
Zion does most of the work—you just want to show up feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the experience.
