Is White Pocket Worth It?
White Pocket had been on my bucket list for so long.
As a Southern Utah local, I’ve explored a lot of incredible places—but this one always felt just out of reach. I didn’t have a 4WD vehicle, and it’s not exactly the kind of place you just casually drive to.
So when a friend finally invited me to go this past February, I was all in.

And now that I’ve been? Yes… White Pocket is absolutely worth it. But there are a few things you should know before you commit to the adventure.
White Pocket is located in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, just outside of Kanab.
It’s known for its unreal swirling rock formations, layered sandstone, and soft, creamy textures that almost don’t look real.
A lot of people compare it to The Wave—but the biggest difference? No permit required.

Getting There: Is It Difficult?
We headed out from Kanab and gave ourselves about 2.5 hours to get there.
Honestly, the roads weren’t too bad the day we went, and we ended up arriving a little early—which I highly recommend if you can swing it.
That said…
This is not a casual drive.
You’ll be navigating deep sand
You need high-clearance 4WD (not AWD)
There’s no cell service
I personally went with someone who had the right vehicle, but if you’re unsure, I would absolutely consider going with a guide.
If you’re planning a trip through Southern Utah, this is one of those adventures that takes a little more effort—but can absolutely be worth it. I break down other adventures your can go on while visiting Kanab, UT in this blog post → [The 12 Most Adventurous Things to Do in Kanab, Utah]
What the Experience Is Actually Like
Once you arrive, you follow a deep sandy path for about 1/4 mile toward the rock formations.
And then…..You just explore.
There’s no defined trail. No set route. Just endless sandstone formations to wander through.
I spent about 2 hours there and honestly could have stayed another two.
Every section I explored led to something new—
a hidden alcove
a swirl of color
a completely different texture
It just kept getting better.
What Makes White Pocket So Special
For me, this place was pure magic.
The combination of:
soft sandstone
wild patterns
and glowing light
…made it feel completely different from anywhere else in Southern Utah.
And the light?.......Unreal.
If you can, plan your visit for sunrise or sunset. We were there for sunset, and watching that golden light hit the rocks was one of those moments you just don’t forget.
Is It Crowded?
I’ll be honest—we didn’t have it to ourselves.
There were a few tour groups there when we visited.
But here’s the thing:
The area is big enough that it still felt peaceful.
As I wandered further out, I found plenty of quiet pockets where it felt like I had the place to myself.
Is It Physically Difficult?
This might surprise people.
It’s not a long hike—but it is more physically demanding than you’d expect.
You’re constantly:
climbing up and down rock
navigating uneven terrain
exploring without a clear path
By the end of our 2 hours there, I was exhausted—and definitely felt it in my legs the next day.
You don’t need to be super fit, but a moderate level of fitness definitely helps.
